The Road Through the Forest – Дорога через лес

After a few hours the road began to be rough (спустя несколько часов дорога начала становиться ухабистой; rough – грубый; неровный; ухабистый / о дороге /), and the walking grew so difficult that the Scarecrow often stumbled over the yellow bricks (и ходьба становилась такой трудной = и идти становилось так трудно, что Страшила часто спотыкался о желтые кирпичи), which were here very uneven (которые были здесь очень неровными). Sometimes, indeed, they were broken or missing altogether (иногда, на самом деле, они были разбиты или вовсе отсутствовали; to miss – промахнуться; недоставать; missing – недостающий, отсутствующий, пропавший), leaving holes that Toto jumped across and Dorothy walked around (оставляя /после себя такие/ ямы, через которые Тото перепрыгивал, а Дороти обходила вокруг). As for the Scarecrow, having no brains, he walked straight ahead (что же касается Страшилы, то, так как у него не было мозгов: «не имея мозгов», он шел прямо вперед), and so stepped into the holes and fell at full length on the hard bricks (и поэтому наступал прямо в эти ямы и падал во весь рост на жесткие кирпичи; to step – шагать, ступать; length – длина; one's length – чей -либо рост; to fall all one's length – растянуться во весь рост). It never hurt him, however (это, однако, никогда = вовсе /не/ вредило ему), and Dorothy would pick him up and set him upon his feet again (и Дороти поднимала его и снова ставила его на ноги), while he joined her in laughing merrily at his own mishap (и они вместе весело смеялись над его /собственной/ неудачей: «в то время как он присоединялся к ней в том, что смеялся весело…»; to join – соединять, объединять; присоединяться / принять участие в чем -либо /).

The farms were not nearly so well cared for here as they were farther back (фермы = поля /здесь/ вовсе не были так хорошо возделаны, как те, что /остались/ далеко позади; not nearly – совсем не, далеко не; to care for – заботиться / о ком – либо, о чем – либо /, ухаживать). There were fewer houses and fewer fruit trees (/здесь/ было меньше домов и меньше фруктовых деревьев), and the farther they went the more dismal and lonesome the country became (и, чем дальше они шли, тем более мрачной и пустынной становилась страна; lonesome – одинокий; малолюдный, пустынный).

At noon they sat down by the roadside, near a little brook (в полдень они присели на обочине, около маленького ручья), and Dorothy opened her basket and got out some bread (и Дороти открыла свою корзину и достала немного хлеба). She offered a piece to the Scarecrow, but he refused (она предложила кусочек Страшиле, но тот отказался).

The farms were not nearly so well cared for here as they were farther back. There were fewer houses and fewer fruit trees, and the farther they went the more dismal and lonesome the country became.

At noon they sat down by the roadside, near a little brook, and Dorothy opened her basket and got out some bread. She offered a piece to the Scarecrow, but he refused.

"I am never hungry (я никогда /не/ голоден), " he said, "and it is a lucky thing I am not (удачная вещь = и это удачно, что я не /голоден/), for my mouth is only painted (так как мой рот только нарисован), and if I should cut a hole in it so I could eat (и если я прорежу в нем дырку, чтобы я смог есть), the straw I am stuffed with would come out (то солома, которой я набит, вывалится наружу), and that would spoil the shape of my head (а это испортит форму моей головы). "

Dorothy saw at once that this was true (Дороти сразу же увидела, что это было правдой), so she only nodded and went on eating her bread (поэтому она только кивнула головой и продолжила есть хлеб; to go on – продолжать путь; продолжать / делать что – либо /).

lucky ['lAkI], painted ['peIntId], spoil [spOIl], bread [bred]

"I am never hungry," he said, "and it is a lucky thing I am not, for my mouth is only painted, and if I should cut a hole in it so I could eat, the straw I am stuffed with would come out, and that would spoil the shape of my head." Dorothy saw at once that this was true, so she only nodded and went on eating her bread.

"Tell me something about yourself and the country you came from (расскажи мне что-нибудь о себе и о той стране, откуда ты прибыла), " said the Scarecrow, when she had finished her dinner (сказал Страшила, когда она закончила свой обед). So she told him all about Kansas (поэтому она рассказала ему все о Канзасе), and how gray everything was there (и о том, каким серым там все было), and how the cyclone had carried her to this queer Land of Oz (и о том, как ураган принес её в эту странную Страну Оз).

The Scarecrow listened carefully, and said (Страшила выслушал внимательно и сказал), "I cannot understand why you should wish to leave this beautiful country (я не могу понять, почему ты желаешь покинуть эту прекрасную страну) and go back to the dry, gray place you call Kansas (и вернуться в то засушливое серое место, которое ты называешь Канзасом; dry – сухой, обезвоженный; засушливый / о месте, климате /). "

"That is because you have no brains (это потому, что у тебя нет мозгов), " answered the girl.

listen ['lIs(q)n], understand ["Andq'stxnd], dry [draI], because [bI'kOz]

"Tell me something about yourself and the country you came from," said the Scarecrow, when she had finished her dinner. So she told him all about Kansas, and how gray everything was there, and how the cyclone had carried her to this queer Land of Oz.

The Scarecrow listened carefully, and said, "I cannot understand why you should wish to leave this beautiful country and go back to the dry, gray place you call Kansas."

"That is because you have no brains," answered the girl.

"No matter how dreary and gray our homes are (неважно, насколько унылы и серы наши дома; dreary – мрачный, безотрадный), we people of flesh and blood would rather live there than in any other country (мы, люди из плоти и крови, будем лучше жить там, чем в любой другой стране; flesh – плоть), be it ever so beautiful (какой бы красивой она ни была). There is no place like home (нет места, подобного /родному/ дому = в гостях хорошо, а дома лучше). "

The Scarecrow sighed (Страшила вздохнул).

"Of course I cannot understand it (конечно же, я не могу этого понять), " he said. "If your heads were stuffed with straw, like mine (если бы ваши головы были набиты соломой, как у меня: «как моя /голова/»), you would probably all live in the beautiful places (вы, возможно, все бы жили в прекрасных местах), and then Kansas would have no people at all (и тогда в Канзасе вовсе бы не осталось людей). It is fortunate for Kansas that you have brains (Канзасу повезло, что у вас есть мозги; fortune – счастье, фортуна; удача, успех; fortunate – счастливый, удачный; благоприятный). "

"Won't you tell me a story, while we are resting (а ты не расскажешь мне какую-нибудь историю, пока мы отдыхаем) ?" asked the child.

The Scarecrow looked at her reproachfully, and answered (Страшила взглянул на нее укоризненно и ответил; reproach – упрек, попрек; to reproach – попрекать, укорять) : "My life has been so short that I really know nothing whatever (моя жизнь такая короткая, что я действительно ничего не знаю; whatever – какой бы ни; любой; какой бы то ни было, любой; /в отрицательных предложениях и с отрицательным смыслом/ никакой, совсем не, вообще не: nothing whatever – абсолютно ничего). "

dreary ['drIqrI], flesh [fleS], blood [blAd], sigh [saI], reproachfully [rI'prqutSfulI]

"No matter how dreary and gray our homes are, we people of flesh and blood would rather live there than in any other country, be it ever so beautiful. There is no place like home." The Scarecrow sighed.

"Of course I cannot understand it," he said. "If your heads were stuffed with straw, like mine, you would probably all live in the beautiful places, and then Kansas would have no people at all. It is fortunate for Kansas that you have brains."

"Won't you tell me a story, while we are resting?" asked the child.

The Scarecrow looked at her reproachfully, and answered: "My life has been so short that I really know nothing whatever."

"I was only made day before yesterday (я был сделан только позавчера). What happened in the world before that time is all unknown to me (что произошло в мире до того времени – мне это все = совершенно не известно). Luckily, when the farmer made my head (к счастью, когда фермер делал мою голову; luck – фортуна, судьба; везение, удача; luckily – к счастью, по счастливой случайности), one of the first things he did was to paint my ears (одну из первых в ещё й, что он сделал, так это нарисовал мои уши), so that I heard what was going on (поэтому я слышал, что происходило). There was another Munchkin with him (с ним был ещё один Манчкин), and the first thing I heard was the farmer saying (и первое, что я услышал, были слова фермера: «я услышал, как фермер говорит»), `How do you like those ears (как тебе нравятся эти уши) ?' 'They aren't straight (они кривые: «не прямые»; straight – неизогнутый, прямой), '" answered the other (ответил другой /Манчкин/).

"`Never mind (не беда; never mind – ничего, неважно, не беспокойтесь), '" said the farmer. "`They are ears just the same (это все равно уши; just the same – таким же образом; тем не менее, все-таки: «точно такое же»), '" which was true enough (что, в общем-то, было правдой: «правдой достаточно»).

"I was only made day before yesterday. What happened in the world before that time is all unknown to me. Luckily, when the farmer made my head, one of the first things he did was to paint my ears, so that I heard what was going on. There was another Munchkin with him, and the first thing I heard was the farmer saying, 'How do you like those ears?' 'They aren't straight,'" answered the other.

"`Never mind,'" said the farmer. "`They are ears just the same,'" which was true enough.

"`Now I'll make the eyes (теперь я сделаю глаза), '" said the farmer. So he painted my right eye (и он нарисовал мой правый глаз), and as soon as it was finished (и как только он был закончен = нарисован) I found myself looking at him and at everything around me with a great deal of curiosity (я обнаружил, что смотрю на него и на все вокруг себя с большой /долей/ любопытства; deal – некоторое количество; a great deal of – много), for this was my first glimpse of the world (ведь это был мой первый /беглый/ взгляд на мир; glimpse – проблеск, слабый свет; беглый взгляд, беглое знакомство).

"That's a rather pretty eye (вот, довольно хороший глаз; pretty – миловидный, прелестный; приятный; хороший / о вещах /), " remarked the Munchkin who was watching the farmer (заметил Манчкин, наблюдавший за фермером). "'Blue paint is just the color for eyes (голубая краска – самый подходящий цвет для глаз: «как раз цвет для глаз»). '

"`I think I'll make the other a little bigger (я думаю, что сделаю другой /глаз/ немного побольше), '" said the farmer. And when the second eye was done I could see much better than before (и, когда второй глаз был выполнен, я смог видеть намного лучше, чем раньше). Then he made my nose and my mouth (затем он сделал = нарисовал мой нос и мой рот). But I did not speak, because at that time I didn't know what a mouth was for (но я не говорил, потому что в то время я не знал, для чего рот /предназначен/).

great [greIt], deal [di:l], glimpse [glImps], rather ['rQ:Dq]

"`Now I'll make the eyes,'" said the farmer. So he painted my right eye, and as soon as it was finished I found myself looking at him and at everything around me with a great deal of curiosity, for this was my first glimpse of the world.

And when the second eye was done I could see much better than before. Then he made my nose and my mouth. But I did not speak, because at that time I didn't know what a mouth was for.

"I had the fun of watching them make my body and my arms and legs (я позабавился, наблюдая, как они делают мое тело, руки и ноги; fun – шутка, веселье; to have fun – веселиться); and when they fastened on my head, at last, I felt very proud (и когда, наконец, они прикрепили мою голову /к телу/, я был очень горд; to fasten – прикреплять, привязывать; to feel – ощупывать, осязать; чувствовать, ощущать; proud – гордый), for I thought I was just as good a man as anyone (потому что я думал, что я был ничуть не хуже других: «был таким же хорошим человеком, как любой другой»).

"'This fellow will scare the crows fast enough (этот парень распугает ворон довольно быстро; fast – быстро, скоро), ' said the farmer. `He looks just like a man (он выглядит совсем как человек). '

"'Why, he is a man (ба, так он и есть человек), ' said the other, and I quite agreed with him (сказал другой, и я вполне с ним согласился).

The farmer carried me under his arm to the cornfield (фермер отнес меня под мышкой: «под рукой» на кукурузное поле), and set me up on a tall stick (и установил меня на высокую палку), where you found me (где ты и нашла меня). He and his friend soon after walked away and left me alone (он и его друг вскоре после этого ушли и оставили меня одного).

"I did not like to be deserted this way (мне не понравилось, /что я оказался/ покинутым таким вот образом; to desert – покидать, оставлять). So I tried to walk after them (поэтому я попытался пойти вслед за ними). But my feet would not touch the ground (но мои ноги не касались земли), and I was forced to stay on that pole (и я был вынужден остаться на шесте; force – сила; насилие, принуждение; to force – оказывать давление, заставлять, принуждать). It was a lonely life to lead (это была одинокая жизнь; to lead – вести, сопровождать; вести, проводить /об образе жизни/), for I had nothing to think of (потому что мне не о чем было думать), having been made such a little while before (поскольку меня сделали столь недавно: «будучи сделан…»).

Many crows and other birds flew into the cornfield (много ворон и других птиц прилетало на кукурузное поле; to fly – летать), but as soon as they saw me they flew away again, thinking I was a Munchkin (но, как только они видели меня, они снова улетали, думая, что я Манчкин); and this pleased me (и это мне нравилось; to please – радовать, доставлять удовольствие; нравиться /кому-либо/) and made me feel that I was quite an important person (и позволяло мне чувствовать, что я был довольно важной персоной).

By and by an old crow flew near me (вскоре один старый ворон подлетел близко ко мне), and after looking at me carefully he perched upon my shoulder and said (и, после того как он тщательно меня оглядел, он уселся мне на плечо и сказал) : "'I wonder if that farmer thought to fool me in this clumsy manner (интересно, неужели фермер думал одурачить меня столь грубым образом; clumsy – неловкий; топорный, неаккуратно сделанный; manner – способ, метод). Any crow of sense could see that you are only stuffed with straw (любая разумная ворона сможет разглядеть, что ты всего лишь набит соломой; sense – чувство, ощущение; здравый смысл). '

Then he hopped down at my feet (затем он спрыгнул = слетел вниз, к моим ногам; hop – прыжок, скачок; to hop – подпрыгивать; прыгать) and ate all the corn he wanted (и съел столько зерна, сколько хотел: «все зерно, какое он хотел»). The other birds, seeing he was not harmed by me (другие птицы, увидев, что я не причинил ему вреда), came to eat the corn too (тоже прилетели, чтобы есть зерно), so in a short time there was a great flock of them about me (так что за короткое время, вокруг меня /собралась/ большая стая /птиц/).

"I felt sad at this (мне было грустно из-за этого), for it showed I was not such a good Scarecrow after all (так как это показывало, что я, в конце концов, не был таким уж хорошим Страшилом: «пугалом»); but the old crow comforted me, saying (но старый ворон успокоил меня, сказав), `If you only had brains in your head (если бы только у тебя были мозги в твоей голове) you would be as good a man as any of them (ты был бы таким же хорошим человеком, как любой из них), and a better man than some of them (и /даже/ лучшим человеком, чем некоторые из них). "After the crows had gone I thought this over (после того, как вороны улетели, я обдумал это; to think – думать), and decided I would try hard to get some brains (и решил, что я буду очень стараться раздобыть немного мозгов; to try – пытаться, стараться; to try hard – очень стараться; hard – жесткий, твердый; настойчиво). "I hope so (надеюсь, что так), " said Dorothy earnestly (серьезно сказала Дороти), "since you seem anxious to have them (так как ты, кажется, очень хочешь их иметь; anxious – озабоченный, беспокоящийся; сильно желающий). "

"Oh, yes; I am anxious (о да, я очень хочу), " returned the Scarecrow. "It is such an uncomfortable feeling to know one is a fool (это такое неприятное чувство – знать, что ты глупец; uncomfortable – неудобный; испытывающий неловкость, стесненный). "

"Well (ну), " said the girl, "let us go (пойдем: «позволь нам идти»). " And she handed the basket to the Scarecrow (и она вручила корзину Страшиле).

There were no fences at all by the roadside now (теперь вдоль обочины вовсе не было заборов), and the land was rough and untilled (и земля была ухабистая и невспаханная; to till – возделывать землю, пахать). It was almost dark under the trees (под деревьями было почти темно), for the branches shut out the daylight (потому чтоветви загораживали дневной свет; to shut out – не допускать, не впускать / кого -либо/; загораживать, закрывать; to shut – закрывать, запирать); but the travelers did not stop (но путешественники не останавливались), and went on into the forest (и продолжали идти вглубь леса).

Dorothy could not see at all (Дороти вообще ничего не видела), but Toto could, for some dogs see very well in the dark (зато Тото видел: «мог /видеть/», потому что некоторые собаки очень хорошо видят в темноте); and the Scarecrow declared he could see as well as by day (и Страшила заявил, что он может видеть так же хорошо, как днем). "Yes, indeed (да, конечно), " answered the child. "I am all tired out (я вся измучена). "

So the Scarecrow led her through the trees until they reached the cottage (тогда Страшила повел её между деревьями: «сквозь деревья», пока они не дошли до домика), and Dorothy entered and found a bed of dried leaves in one corner (и Дороти вошла /в дом/ и обнаружила постель из сухих листьев в одном углу).
